34/365 February 3, 2011 Frozen cactus

It's cold all across the nation. Arizona is no exception... although the severity is certainly less than what some folks are experiencing in snow laden parts of the country.

Things have been SO cold that we've had to resort to covering plants to prevent them from freezing. Interesting thing about cacti, they are mostly water. They DO freeze! One poor little cactus in our back yard doesn't get as much sun as other portions of the yard. So, when those freezes hit, those big water filled pads become rock hard and fall over... or even off... the plant.

I spent about 15 minutes picking up cactus pads for garbage day. I do believe half the cactus fell off. The above is a texturized macro of a frost bitten part of the plant.

Hopefully, this plant will recover and thaw, continuing to grow as it has in previous years.
